Understanding email blacklists

What is an email blacklist?

An email blacklist (also called a DNSBL or RBL) is a real-time database of IP addresses and domains known to send spam or malicious email. Mail servers worldwide check incoming messages against these lists to filter unwanted mail. If your sending IP or domain appears on a blacklist, your emails may be silently dropped, bounced, or routed to spam folders.

How do I get removed from a blacklist?

Each blacklist operator has its own delisting process. Typically you need to visit the blacklist's website, search for your listed IP, and submit a removal request. Before requesting delisting, fix the root cause — whether it's a compromised account, open relay, or high spam complaint rate — or you will be re-listed. Most lists automatically delist IPs after a period of clean behavior.

Why is my IP or domain on a blacklist?

Common reasons include: sending spam (intentionally or from compromised accounts), having an open mail relay, high bounce rates or spam complaints, sharing a mail server IP with a spammer (common on shared hosting), or using a dynamic/residential IP address that some lists block by default (like Spamhaus PBL).

Which blacklists matter most?

Spamhaus (SBL, XBL, PBL), Barracuda, and SpamCop are the most widely used by major email providers like Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo. Being listed on any of these will significantly impact your email deliverability. Smaller or regional lists have less impact but can still cause issues with specific mail servers or organizations.
